A very large, evergreen shrub or small tree up to 30-50’ tall x 30’ wide, with dense, glossy dark green, leathery leaves, often with spines on the edges, that are a dull golden down on the underside often becoming gray and nearly smooth the second year. Catkin-like flowers followed by large acorns topped with a fuzzy golden cap.
