Rhus aromatica

Fragrant sumac

$14.00

An irregular, spreading, deciduous shrub, 6-12’H, with velvety twigs and lower branches turned up at the tips. Glossy, blue-green, coarsely toothed, trifoliate leaves turn orange, red, purple and yellow in the fall. Yellowish catkin-like flowers precede dark-red berries which persist into March. Female flowers give way to clusters of hairy, red berries; in fall, the leaves turn shades of red, orange and purple. Full or partial sun, dry conditions. Although the leaves resemble those of the related poison oak, this plant is not at all poisonous; the crushed foliage results in a pleasant smell.
