A deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 30’H. The bark, light grey when young, changes to a coarse grey outer bark with lengthwise furrowing. Large corymbs of white flowers in mid-summer are pollinated by flies produce drooping clusters of dark purple to black berries in the late autumn; they are an important food for many fruit-eating birds.
