This perennial wildflower of the carrot or parsley (Apiaceae) family is characterized by thick flowering stems that grow 1-4′ H. Small 3-12” yellow umbels bloom March-May and are attractive to many pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Alternate, palmate leaves that have 3-5 lobes that are sharply toothed. The plump, oval seeds are burred, with recurved prickles that cling to socks and fur. Happy in partially shaded oak woodlands or mixed conifer forests, it prefers sandy or well-draining loam.
